Notes for James Knowles:
The Knowles family originally came from Ballyadams, the Townland of Crissard, County Laois, Ireland. Ballyadams meaning in Irish, "the Settlement of Adams." The name Laois or Leix, is derived from the name of Ulster chieftan Lughaidh Laoighseach and is pronounced "Leash." Laois became a County by combining the districts of Glenmaliere and Laois during the reign of Queen Mary I (Tudor) and was named Queen's County in her honor. Queen's County was renamed Laois in 1922 after Ireland's Independence. The County is an inland county in the Province of Leinster. The traditional rulers were the O'Moore's who were displaced by the Tudor plantation which established the "Seven Septs of Leix". According to Patrick Knowles, who operates a farm at Wolfhill, Townland of Crissard, the Knowles family goes back seven generations of male Knowles with the name Michael.

He married at Milan Township, Monroe County, Michigan, on 26 August 1853, ANNE MCMANUS, born in Ireland 1836, the daughter of James and Mary (Curry) McManus. She died at Milan Township, Monroe County, Michigan, on 29 March 1911. Anne married second, ANDREW JACKSON ST. GEORGE, born on Shipboard crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 1838, the son of Edward St. George. He died at Medina, Orleans County, New York, in 1925. Mary and Andrew had the following children: Edward, born 26 December 1861; Mary, born 10 December 1863; Michael, born 10 February 1867; Martha, born September 1870; and Andrew, born 20 November 1871.
