The Descendants of
STEPHAN GIFFORD and HANNAH
GORE
of
Norwich, New London County, Connecticut

1. STEPHEN1 GIFFORD,
was born in England in about 1641, and he died at Norwich, New London County,
Connecticut, on 27 November 1724. Stephen married first, at New London, Connecticut,
on 1 May 1667, HANNAH GORE, born at
London, England, on 18 March 1645, the daughter of Samuel Gore and Elizabeth Hill.
Hannah died at Norwich on 24 January 1670. Stephen married second at Norwich, in
about 1672, HANNAH GALLUP, born in 1644,
the daughter of John and Hannah (Lake) Gallup of Stonington, New London County,
Connecticut. Hannah died in 1724.
Notes for Stephen Gifford:
Stephen Gifford was born in England in 1641. [Directory of the Ancestral
Heads of New England Families, 1620-1700, compiled by Frank R. Holmes,
Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, Maryland, 1980. pg xciii.] Stephen
Gifford appears first in Norwich (founded in 1659), New London County, Connecticut,
as a nineteen-year-old where he owned an original home-lot, although he was not
considered an original proprietor. [History of Norwich, Connecticut, by
Frances Manwaring Caulkins, published by the friends of the author, 1874, page
62; Reproduced by The New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston,
Massachusetts.] Stephen Gifford was a member of the Congregational Church
in Norwich and is buried in the Colonial Cemetery, Norwich Towne (Old Norwich),
Connecticut. Stephen's home-lot was adjacent to and is now a part of the
Congregational Church land on the town square in Norwich Towne.
Although Stephen Gifford was an original settler of Norwich, Connecticut, he
did not receive a land allotment bordering the Yantic River (the married men
apparently got first choice of them), but did get a large lot on the northwest side of
the village green, covering a ledgy side hill, and here he built a house. In 1697,
Stephen sold his house and lot to the town to be used as a parsonage and the
family moved to what was known as the "Great Plains." His village square-lot came
to be know as the parsonage lot and in 1714/15 the Town allowed the Minister, Rev.
Woodward, to fence it in, leaving room for a new meeting house.
There is a monument located off Lee Street in Old Norwich Towne, which was
erected to honor the Founding Fathers of Norwich Town. This is the Mason Monument,
located in the Post-Gager Burial Ground, which was laid out as a common graveyard
in 1661. The burial ground was purchased by the town from Thomas Post, whose wife
had recently been interred there. The founders monument was erected in 1871 as a
memorial to Major John Mason and the thirty-eight original proprietors of Norwich. Their
names are as follows. East side: Major John Mason, Rev. James Fitch, John Pease,
John Tracy, John Baldwin, Jonothan Royce, John Post, Thomas Bigham, Thomas
Waterman and Robert Allen. West side: Sgt. Thomas Lefingwell, Richard Wallis,
Thomas Adgate, John Olmstead, Stephen Backus, Thomas Bliss, John Reynolds,
Joshia Reed, Richard Hendys and Christopher Huntington. South side: Lt. Thomas
Tracy, Samuel Hide, William Hide, Morgan Bowers, Robert Wade, John Birchard,
Simon Huntington, Stephen Gifford and John Bradford. North side: Ensign William
Backus, Francis Griswold, Nehemiah Smith, Thomas Howard, John Calkins, Hugh
Calkins, Richard Edgerton, Thomas Post and John Gager. Source of information
from an article written by Steve Todd.
Notes for Samuel Gore:
Probably the Samuel Goare (Gore) who married Elizabeth Hill of Rotherhithe, a
district of London, 18 Jan 1625/6, as found in Boyd's Marriage Index at the Society of
Genealogists in London. A grocer, Gore was probably also the "Samuel Goore" who
became free of the Grocer's Co., London, 16 May 1622. Late apprentice to Henry
Dodd." [See Register, 115 (1961): 252, 256]
Notes for Elizabeth Hill:
Marriage data from New England Ancestry of The Princess of Wales, p.31, whose
source was Boyd's Marriage Index at the Society of Genealogists in London. Elizabeth
was a resident of Rotherhithe, a district of London. It is through this line that descendants
of Stephen Gifford and Hannah Gore are related to Thomas E. Dewey, Diane, The
Princess of Wales, Fannie Farmer of cookbook fame, and Preston Sturges, playwright.

1984, pp 30, 40].

and he died at the Town of Vienna, Oneida County, New York, on 27 April 1849. Jeremiah
married first in about 1782, PHOEBE WILLIAMS, born
at Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont, in 1765, the daughter of William and ---
Williams. Phoebe died at the Town of Vienna, New York, in 1815. Jeremiah married second,
at the Town of Vienna, New York, on 12 June 1819, by William Smith, Esq.,
SALLY ---, born at Nova Scotia, Canada in about 1768, died at the
Town of Vienna, New York, in December 1853. Sally married first, --- GRAVES.
Notes for Jeremiah Gifford, Jr.:
Born: LDS film #1396133.
Other facts: Prominent men of Utah-801 & Rev war pensions file W-1411
Drafted May 1781 at Norwich, Connecticut in Capt. Hydes Co., Col. Rogers Regt. of
Militia, served three months at New London Connecticut; Enlisted April 1782 at
Norwich, Connecticut in Capt. Charles Miles' Co., Col. Samuel Canfield's Regt. and
served one year at Stamford, Connecticut as a Private in the Connecticut Line.
After the Revolutionary War, Jeremiah remained in Norwich, Connecticut, where
on 6 June 1783, he bought a house on a 3/4 acre lot on Wawecus Hill Road. He
stayed there until he sold the property on 20 Sept. 1791. Jeremiah then moved to German
Flatts, Herkimer County, New York, where his brother Absolam, who had married Mary
Williams, had already settled with his family. By 1810, Jeremiah had moved his family
20 miles farther west and settled near Verona, Oneida County, New York, not far from the
Town of Vienna, where he died on 27 April 1849.
The following excerpt is from William Underwood's, They Closed the Stores on
Family Reunion Day, page 18 and deals with a problem that has bothered Gifford
family researchers for over 50 years. Gifford family historians had formerly placed
three Jeremiahs in the Gifford lineage line: Steven6, Jeremiah5,
Jeremiah4, Jeremiah3, Samuel2, Stephen1.
William Underwood's research gives documented proof that there were only two Jeremiahs
in the lineage line and not the three as previously thought. William Underwood also
published an article on this subject in the March 1990 issue of the Nutmegger,
journal of the Connecticut Genealogical Society. The citation is Vol #22, Number 4,
March 1990, pages 754/56 of the Connecticut Nutmegger -- "Which Jeremiah"
"The problem of which I speak comes from a lack of documentation for the parentage
of both Jeremiah, born 1761 and Absolam, born 1766. Family historians had generally
thought that they were the sons of either Absolam, born 1733, or Jeremiah, born 1735/6.
Proof of their brother kinship was established in the Revolutionary Pension file of
Absolam, which noted also that Jeremiah was know as Jeremiah, Jr. This further narrowed
the choice to Jeremiah, born 1735/36. The generation timing was natural and so, after
stating the assumptions, I had accepted it. In 1986, I uncovered evidence that this was
not true; that apparently both Absolam and Jeremiah born in the 1730's had disappeared
and that Jeremiah 4, born 1761 and Absolam, born 1766, actually were the sons
of Jeremiah 3, born 1708.
"We have already seen that Jeremiah and his family had left German Flats and settled
in the Town of Verona, not far from Vienna. This area of New York State often presents
problems to family historians because of a lack of records supporting dates of births,
deaths and marriages. At the time I was working with Gordon Baird of Whitesboro, NY.
He was a great grandson of Asa Gifford, I was a great grandson of Stephen, Asa's brother.
He was County Road Commissioner for Oneida County and introduced me to a record I had
never seen quoted, The New York Highway Record Book. The book fulfilled the record
requirements of a New York law which required that freeholders, "and every free, male
inhabitant, being above the age of 21 shall be assessed to work on the public roads."
The first Town (midwestern readers read "Township") of Verona Highway Record book for
1810-25 shows an April 5, 1819 record in which Jeremiah4, Asa and George A.
Smith, Asa's father-in-law, working on the roads. They may have been there before that
time. Stephen5 appears in 1812, which supports a 1791 birth date, 1791 + 21
= 1812. Jeremiah disappears in 1814, when he moved to the village of Vienna, as does
Stephen in 1815, when he made the same move. Asa continues in this, and subsequent books,
until 1859.
In another section of his book, They Closed the Stores on Family Reunion Day, William Underwood states: "It was while he was living at Washington (Utah), and shortly
after the death of (wife) Polly, that John (Peck Chidester) acting as a sponsor at a
Baptism for the Dead in St George Temple (Church of LDS), took part in services that
finally cleared up the question of Jeremiah Jr's parentage of which I wrote earlier.
As a sponsor, he gave his relationship to David Chidester as grandson (David was John
Peck Chidester's father), to Jeremiah Jr. Gifford and to Absolam and Elisha as grand
nephews. Absolam, Elisha and Jeremiah, Jr would thus all be brothers. As you know,
this relationship had been documented by their pension records. The fact that
Jeremiah3 was the father of Elisha had been proved by Norwich Vital Records.
Now we can say with certainty who the father of our Jeremiah Jr. was, and a long
standing problem has been put to rest."

Notes for Mary Ann "Polly" Gifford:
LDS Church records, Endowment House entry #183395, "Mary Ann "Polly" Gifford
married John Young," younger brother of Brigham Young. In the early days of the LDS
Church such a marriage as this was entered into by women who "hoped that in this way
they might ride into the hereafter on the coattails of some famous person." This type of
marriage without cohabitation was later frowned on, but such marriages had been quite
common. In the eyes of the Church, Polly and John Young were married.

(Jeremiah4, Jeremiah3, Samuel
2, Stephen1), was born at Norwich, New
London County, Connecticut, on 11 August 1791, and he died at Ridgeway,
Lenawee County, Michigan, on 1 March 1866. Stephen married at the Town of Vienna,
Oneida County, New York, on 5 October 1810, ABIGAIL
LAURA COVELL, born at Lanesboro, Berkshire
County, Massachusetts, on 4 August 1793, the daughter of William Hollister and
Jerusha (Hollis) Covell. Abigail died at Dundee Township, Monroe County, Michigan,
on 12 May 1870. Stephen and Abigail were buried at the Ridgeway Township Cemetery,
Lenawee County, Michigan.
Notes for Stephen Gifford:
An application for membership in the National Society of the United States Daughters
of 1812 was submitted by one of Stephen Gifford's descendants. In it, the applicant traced
her relationship back to her grandfather Stephen Gifford, and then supported her claim to
membership with a letter from the U. S. Adjutant General's office dated 2 December 1943
which said, "The records of this office show that one Stephen Gifford served in the War
of 1812 as Captain of a Company designated as Captain Stephen Gifford's Company, 76
Regiment (Tuckers) New York Militia. He was appointed Captain on 28 July 1814, served
25 days and his service expired 21 August 1814. No record of his date or place of birth or
of his personal family history." (signed) Robert Dunlap, Brigadier. The applicant's membership
was issued on 19 March 1945.
The Society's Ancestor Index, page 203, lists the following two items: "Gifford, Stephen, born New York, 1793, died New York 1865, Capt New York Militia. m.
Abigail Covell-dau Sarah A. married Sylvester Zeluff"
"Gifford, Stephen, born Connecticut 1780, died New York 1865, Capt New York Militia. m.
Hannah Warren-dau Delia married Chester Blodgett/dau Martha A. married Rosewell
Woodruff Sherman."
The Adjutant General's letter (above) spoke of one Stephen Gifford serving in the
War of 1812, not two. The first Stephen Gifford listed would have been the Stephen
Gifford who came to Michigan and died there. He would have been 21 years of age in
1812, hardly the proper age for a Captain in the New York Militia. Also, there are
mistakes in the description: He was not been born in New York, he was not born in
1793, and did not die in New York. The Military Service file from the GSA on Stephen
Gifford concerns the second Stephen Gifford listed above. There had been two Stephen
Gifford's of the proper age group, but only one had served as Captain in the War of
1812, and he was not the Stephen Gifford who came to Michigan or the Stephen Gifford
claimed by the person to whom the membership application had been improperly issued.
It is obvious from the above facts concerning the 1812 application that the service
records attributed to Stephen Gifford, the younger, were "lifted" from the records
of Captain Gifford of New York and inappropriately credited to Stephen Gifford of
Michigan. Stephen's brother Asa had served in the War of 1812, but not Stephen.
The two Stephens were 3rd cousins, their lineage lines both tracing to Stephen 1 as follows:
Stephen Gifford (Michigan) by way of Jeremiah4, Jeremiah3,
Samuel2 to Stephen1.
Captain Gifford (New York) by way of Ziba4, Samuel3,
Samuel2 to Stephen1.

200. PHOEBE ANN6
GIFFORD (Stephen5,
Jeremiah4, Jeremiah3,
Samuel2, Stephen1), was born at
the Town of Vienna, Oneida County, New York, on 15 March 1819, and
she died at Ridgeway, Lenawee County, Michigan, on 21 December 1891.
Phoebe married at Ridgeway, Lenawee County, Michigan, on 2 April 1838,
THOMAS ALLISON, born Yorkshire, England,
on 16 March 1810. Thomas died at Ridgeway, Lenawee County, Michigan, on
22 April 1888. Thomas and Phoebe Ann were buried at the Ridgeway
Township Cemetery, Lenawee County, Michigan.
Notes for Thomas Allison:
1828-Immigration data from William Underwood: "Thomas migrated from
England at age 18; landed in New York, went to Oswego, New York for 5
years, then to the Michigan Territory in 1833. Once Thomas arrived in Michigan,
he lived with a Mr. Edmonds and his family for five years, supporting himself as
best he could, with what ever jobs he could find. His obituary says that he helped
build the Globe Mill dam in Tecumseh. Thomas' place of birth in England has not
been determined, but one branch of the family claims he said he came from Yorkshire,
the town of Scarborough. Another branch states he was from Sheffield. Both may be
correct as Scarborough is a port city and Thomas may have sailed from there whereas
he was actually from Sheffield. A genealogical researcher in Scarborough,
England has stated that Allison is not a Scarborough name and is more likely from the
Vale (or Valley) of Pickering. He also stated that the name could have originally been
"ALYSTON."
1838-2 April. Marriage of Thomas Allison and Phoebe Ann Gifford by Rev. Wm.
Sprague at the Ridgeway M.E. Church. [Data from the Tecumseh Herald dated 31
December 1891 when Phoebe died.]
Death data from obit in Tecumseh Herald dated 26 April 1888 when Thomas died
and from Michigan Dept of Health records (Registered #1092), Lansing Michigan. The
Civil War pension claim for his son Champlin "Champ" Allison, (No. 356203) contained
a physical description of Thomas Allison as follows: "In 1863 Thomas Allison was,
according to his family record, 53 years old and in feeble health. Had a cancer on his face,
which had destroyed his left eye, and the sight of the right eye was defective. Had
rheumatism, neuralgia, and was decrepit, and much broken down generally in 1863." The
pension claim went on to say that Thomas was a farmer owning 60 acres of land in
Ridgeway Township with an estimated value in 1863 of $1,800. The thrust of the pension
claim was that Thomas was incapable of work and that Champlin had been Thomas and
Phoebe's sole support. The farm was located on the west side of the Ridge Road, just
south of Ridgeway. A deed recorded January 3, 1839, at the Lenawee Courthouse in
Adrian, describes the property as the Southwest quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section
No. Nine in Township No. Six south of range No. Five East, containing 40 acres. The
property was purchased from James Johnson and wife Maria Ann for $500. Thomas
assumed a mortgage for $200 from Johnson, on which he defaulted, with the property

and took place in Frederick and Washington Counties, Maryland. South
Mountain is also known in Southern accounts as the Battle of Boonsboro
Gap. Alonzo recovered, was returned to duty, recommended for the Medal
of Honor for "Conspicuous Gallantry", eventually made 1st Sergeant,
mustered out 3 June 1865. After his death, his widow filed for a widow's
pension, charging that his death was the result of his South Mountain wounds.
She supported her claim with "autopsical" reports and a letter from Col. Luce
of the 17th Mich., who said that he had advised Alonzo to file for a disability
pension, but that Alonzo had declined on the "grounds that he did not want to
be a government pauper." The widow was granted a pension, which, at the
